Home-Field Advantage, By the Numbers
"Home-field advantage" gets treated as an article of faith β everyone agrees it's real, almost nobody can say how big it is or why. That's a problem if you're pricing a game, because a vague belief doesn't tell you whether the home team's edge is worth half a point or three. We build a specific, sport-by-sport number into every model we run, and the process of measuring it turns out to be more interesting than the number itself.
What home advantage actually is
Home advantage isn't one thing β it's several distinct effects bundled into a single observable win-rate bump. Crowd support raises arousal and energy for the home side (and, per the research on referee behaviour below, appears to shift officiating too). Travel fatigue works against the away team specifically on short weeks or long-haul trips. Familiarity β with the pitch dimensions, the locker room, the sightlines, the local weather β removes small frictions the visiting team has to adapt to in real time. Each of these decays or intensifies under different conditions, which is exactly why a single constant number is a simplification, not a law of nature.

Get real value bets flagged for you β 7-day free trialThe most contested of the three is referee bias, but it's the best-documented in peer-reviewed sports economics: studies across football (soccer), the NFL and basketball have repeatedly found home teams draw fewer fouls/penalties and more stoppage time added in tight, crowd-heavy moments than a neutral read of the same incidents would predict. Nobody argues officials are consciously favouring the home side β the effect shows up as a crowd-noise-driven bias in split-second judgment calls, which is also why it shrinks in matches played in near-silent stadiums.
How we measure it: Elo points, not vibes
Our models express home advantage as a fixed bonus added to the home team's Elo rating before computing a win probability via the standard logistic formula (see our Elo ratings guide for the full mechanics). A bigger bonus means a bigger implied edge; the size of that bonus is fit to a decade or more of actual results per sport, not assumed.
The numbers, across our models
- NFL: home bonus β48 Elo points, worth roughly 1.5β2 points on a spread β a stable, well-funded league with chartered travel and minimal familiarity gaps between franchises.
- College football: home bonus β62 Elo points, worth roughly 2β2.5 points β bigger student-section crowds, longer and less predictable road trips, and shallower rosters combine into a structurally larger edge than the NFL's.
- Football (soccer): a +50 Elo home bonus built directly into our team-strength feature β with one deliberate exception: it drops to zero at neutral venues (World Cup, continental finals), since a neutral ground has no home crowd, familiarity or reduced travel burden to speak of.
The COVID natural experiment
The cleanest evidence that crowd effects are real, not superstition, came from an accident of history. When COVID-19 emptied stadiums across world football in 2020, home win rates β which had sat around 46% for decades β fell to roughly 41% almost overnight, with no change whatsoever to the two rosters on the pitch. Travel and familiarity didn't go anywhere; only the crowd did. That's about as close to a controlled experiment as sports produces, isolating the crowd component specifically. It's exactly why we treat 2020's empty-stadium seasons as a structural break in our training data rather than blending them uncritically with normal-crowd seasons.
Home advantage has been shrinking for a decade
Beyond the COVID shock, home advantage has also been drifting downward more gradually across most major sports over the past ten to fifteen years β not because crowds got quieter, but because the structural gaps that used to separate home and away preparation have narrowed. Better recovery science and chartered travel reduce jet lag and short-week fatigue for visitors; instant replay and multi-angle review reduce the room for crowd noise to sway an official's whistle in real time; and modern scouting means an away team walks in with almost as much game-specific preparation as the home side used to enjoy alone. None of that erases home advantage β the numbers above are still real and still worth pricing β but a model that hard-codes one constant forever will drift stale.
