An Elo rating is a single number that captures a team's current strength. Every NHL team starts a season near the league average of 1500, then gains or loses points after each game. Beat a stronger team and you gain more; lose to a weaker one and you drop further. Because the system is self-correcting, the table you see above is a live, results-driven power ranking rather than an opinion.
The size of each move depends on the result and the margin of victory — a one-goal overtime win shifts the needle far less than a four-goal blowout — and on how surprising the result was relative to the two teams' ratings. Over an 82-game season that churn settles into a stable ordering that tracks which teams are genuinely playing the best hockey.
The practical value of Elo is that the gap between any two ratings converts directly into a win probability: roughly a 400-point edge implies about a 90% chance of winning a neutral-ice matchup, before home advantage. The same NHL Elo is one of the inputs to our NHL prediction model, so this page is a window into part of how those forecasts are built. Ratings refresh after every game and reset partway toward 1500 each new season to avoid carrying stale form across years.
Elo moves after every game (more for an upset or a blowout) and regresses toward the mean each new season.
