Why betting lines move

A betting line is a live price, not a fixed opinion. When bookmakers take significant, well-regarded money on one side — or new information lands, such as team news or weather — they re-price the game to balance their risk. The sharpest books move first and most decisively, because the customers they serve are the best-informed segment of the market; softer books usually follow their lead.

A sustained move of this size toward one side means the market's collective estimate has genuinely shifted — one of the strongest public signals in betting. It is still not a guarantee: prices express probabilities, and the less-fancied outcome keeps winning its share of games. What a sharp move does tell you is where the informed money believed the earlier price was wrong.
