The Week 1 Blind Spot: Why Projections Carry More Uncertainty Than Usual

Week 1 is the one week where the 'recent weeks' half of our scoring formula literally doesn't exist yet. Every player's weighted-usage component is empty, so the ranking this week leans almost entirely on preseason draft projections and last season's opponent-strength data — both of which are already a few months stale by kickoff.

That matters most for players whose situations changed over the offseason: new offensive coordinators, revamped offensive lines, or backfields that were murky all summer. A running back who profiled as a bell-cow in a depth-chart battle in June can look completely different once real snap counts start rolling in during Weeks 2 and 3, and there's simply no in-season data yet to catch that shift.

Opponent-strength inputs face a similar lag. Defensive efficiency and Elo ratings for Week 1 opponents are carried over from last season, before any offseason coaching changes, free-agent losses, or rookie additions on that side of the ball. A defense that finished strong last year but lost its coordinator or top two cornerbacks in free agency will still show up as a tough matchup here, even though the underlying unit may look nothing like it did in December.

None of this makes Week 1 rankings less useful — it just means the model is working with its widest error bars of the season. Treat this week's read as a directional starting point rather than a fine-grained call, and expect our Week 2 and 3 boards to sharpen considerably once actual usage data starts flowing in.
