Season openers expose a quirk in any recency-weighted fantasy score: there are no 'recent weeks' yet. For Thursday's opener, the projection effectively collapses to pure draft-based expectation, since the actual-usage weighting has nothing from the current season to draw on. That matters for how much confidence to put in early-week rankings versus what the board will look like by Week 4 or 5.
The opponent-strength factor faces a similar lag. Defensive efficiency and Elo inputs for Week 1 are necessarily carried over from last season's numbers, before any new coordinators, personnel changes, or scheme tweaks show up in the data. A defense can look very different in September than it did the previous December, and that gap won't close until several games of fresh data accumulate.
San Francisco and Los Angeles is also a divisional opener, which historically produces more familiarity-driven game plans — both staffs know each other's tendencies well. That can suppress big-play upside for skill players early, even when raw talent grades are strong, though this is a pattern worth testing rather than assuming.
